Reaching 2600 m of altitude on wheels
Macedonia is a country of hot, dry summers, but also a country with some of the highest mountains in the Balkans. No place else can you reach 2600 m on wheels, like you can on mount Pelister. And when you get above 2500 m three times in four days, you can virtually talk about an offroad tour above the clouds. 4x4 travelling in Macedonia can be a truly enchanting journey, and it's not only the mountains that contribute to that, but also the ancient culture and tradition, as well as Ohrid, world's most transparent lake.

Our western Macedonian touring area(precise tracks available to clients)
A Macedonian tour can either be conducted with accomodation in rooms, or wild camping. The later, of course, gives us more freedom to choose our route and fine tune the daily distances. Perhaps it’s best to combine the two. If you do not insist on hotel comfort and can be fine with mountaineering hut bedrooms accomodating up to 15 people, sleeping in the hut on a glacier lake at the altitude of 2.200 m on Pelister can leave quite an impression.
In Macedonia there is less mud than elsewhere in the Balkans, but some mountain trails can be extremely rocky. So for that reason tyre models with thick sidewalls for rock-crawling and at least a moderate lift are recommended.
So, Macedonia is not all about the mountains. You shouldn’t miss the magnificent Ohrid lake with all it’s monasteries and other historic monuments (it’s banks were settled in prehistoric times already, and there is the museum in place of the settlement), and you should spend at least a day in the beautiful town of Ohrid. And on Galičica mountain there is a scenic viewpoint from which you can see Ohrid and Prespa lake on the other side at the same time!
Although not a big country, due to it’s natural values Macedonia has numerous national parks. The longest and highest mountain ranges are situated in the west part of the country, while the eastern part has slightly lower mountains, but with far more dense forests. So it really is marvelously diverse, promissing a dynamic journey full of impressions.
Equipment of your vehicle for Macedonia tours should include
- AT class tyres (MT can be considered as a stronger sidewall option)
- a rooftop or classic tent (for camping tours)
- cooking and other equipment for food preparation (if camping)
- a shovel
- a compact axe, and a saw
- a can with at least 10 l of spare fuel
- 1 or more snake-ropes for recovery
- CB radio
You should also consider
- Protective sheets over your paint (for tours in the eastern part of the country)
- Additional camping gear (tables and chairs, etc.)
(having low gear ratio can be an advantage in certain situations)
Tour preparation and execution
For Macedonian tours our meeting point will usually be Skopje, the capitol of Macedonia, from where we’ll proceed as a convoy to our desired offroad starting point (don’t forget to get a green card vehicle insurance issued before departing for Macedonia). Before we leave Skopje we will replenish our food and fuel supplies. Depending on the route we take according to the tour plan we prepared for you, the distance to the next town can easily exceed 200 km. In some places such as the Solunska Glava peak (2540 m), where there are military installations, visitors need to take special care not to make pictures and videos of the installations (everything is closely monitored). The tour details, such as the points of interest you’d like to visit, accomodation options and tour dynamics, will be defined in the process of tour preparation after we receive your application.
